Buying Tumblr might make Yahoo cool — but buying Pinterest might have made more sense

If Marissa Mayer is on a mission to teach kids about her company, which was founded before some of them were even born, buying Tumblr isn’t a bad way to do it. But in all the discussion of Yahoo’s new deal, too many people are writing about Yahoo buying a blogging site, comparing Tumblr to WordPress, when in fact Tumblr is more of a photo site for the youngs.

While buying Tumblr isn’t necessarily a bad deal for the two companies, as my colleague Mathew Ingram wrote, there’s another photo site out there that might have been an even better deal: Pinterest.

pinterest layoutIn many ways, Pinterest is also building a mobile-friendly photo site just like Tumblr, but Pinterest is also in the midst of constructing the underpinnings for a potentially much more lucrative native revenue experience. Pinterest is oriented around commerce and consumers craving particular items. That’s good for…

Hezbollah preparing to attack Israel, commander says

Hezbollah preparing to attack Israel, commander says.

Terror group reportedly now has sophisticated Russian weapons

Published: 10 hours ago

Tabnak, an outlet of Iran’s Islamic regime, said an unidentified Hezbollah commander, in an interview with the Kuwaiti paper Alrai, thanked Syrian President Bashar Assad for keeping his promise to provide those weapons to Hezbollah.

“The weapons given to Hezbollah will change the balance of power,” he said.

“We have in recent days done extensive operations for reconnaissance on Israel’s central and sensitive military and infrastructural installations in different areas and also on Israel’s commando posts and peacekeeping forces in the Golan Heights,” he said, “to prepare for the coming battle with the occupying regime.”

The commander revealed some of the weapons…

Iran fears growing Israel-Azerbaijan cooperation

ESR | May 20, 2013 | Iran fears growing Israel-Azerbaijan cooperation.

By Lt.-Col. (ret.) Michael Segall
web posted May 20, 2013

The visit to Israel in April 2013 by Azeri Foreign Minister Elmar Mamadyarov, which involved meetings with the president, prime minister, and security officials including the defense minister, again intensified Tehran’s concerns over the growing ties between Jerusalem and Baku, both of which view Iran as a threat, albeit to different extents.

A telegram sent by the U.S. embassy in Baku at the beginning of 2009 said the Israeli-Azeri relationship was largely hidden from view and that Azeri President Ilham Aliyev had described it as “an iceberg, nine-tenths of it is below the surface.” Since then, considerable security, political, and economic elements have been added to this relationship, only aggravating Tehran’s fears about the more covert aspects.

This tightening of Israeli-Azeri relations augments Iran’s sense of encirclement, which…

Dear Kitty. Some blog

This video from Britain says about itself:

Workers’ Memorial Day – Trade Union Struggles: Remember the Dead, Fight for the Living

Nov 29, 2011

A film made to mark the annual Workers’ Memorial Day (April 28th) in Hartlepool, which has since been used nationally. On this day we remember the dead and fight for the living. Music is used with kind permission of the composer. Written, filmed and edited by Gary Kester, Hartlepool College Marketing Services.

From daily The Morning Star in Britain:

Market Research

Live2EatEat2Live Blog

At least that’s the story, and I’m sticking to it. Heh heh.

We picked up a box of chocolates for Aunty M (she prefers See’s over the shop’s).

Sample chocolate from See’s Candies. Whole peanuts in milk chocolate. It was okay.

From Patisserie La Palme D’Or. I didn’t mind the upper half of the dessert (the mousse part), thought the lower half was slightly dry (the sponge cake part). The Cat preferred the lower half.

Informal and unscientific potential competition for the chocolate shop. Informal and unscientific. Hee hee.

Enjoy. Eat well.

“It took several international villages to put my show together,” pop icon tells the BBMA crowd.

Thanks to the worldwide success of her MDNA Tour, Madonna was honored as the Top Touring Artist at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards, held on Sunday night (May 19) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

The legendary diva took the stage with a touch of sass, following an introduction by that was set to the tune of “Like a Virgin.” Referring to a preceding montage of MDNA footage, she proclaimed, “It took longer to negotiate whether I could show my ass in that trailer than it took to negotiate that tour!”

With that out of the way, Madge delved into a laundry list of thank you’s, including choreographers Rich and Tone Talauega, costume designer Arianne Phillips, musical director Kevin Antunes, set designer Mark Fisher, Live Nation’s Arthur Fogel, and of…

How not to get killed by a hippopotamus

Statistically, if you’re on the African subcontinent, you’re more likely to die in an attack by a hippo than by any other animal. They’re mean muthas.

Firstly, they’re big. A full grown large (or common) hippo enters the ring at a fighting weight of up to 4 tons. Even the pygmy hippo is a substantial 600 lbs fully grown. That’s a big pygmy, no? Interestingly, hippos are not big eaters, proportionately speaking. An adult common hippo eats only (!) about 80 lbs of grass and stuff per day, or about 1% of its bodyweight. A cow eats 2.5% of its own bodyweight. Maybe we should farm hippos instead of cows; much more efficient converters. That’s a joke, my urban warrior collective.

Incidentally, a hippo calf is born weighing about 80 lbs, after an amazingly short gestation of only eight months. The mother may give birth on land or in the…

Heroes, Dunces, Truthtellers, Liars, Spinners, Incompetents, and Fools: More Ethics Forensics On The Government Scandal Wave

Ethics Alarms

This is a mercurial story, several in fact, but one of its most valuable uses is to allow us to sort out various individuals and institutions for their trustworthiness and character based upon their words and conduct regarding the multiple scandals hurtling around Washington.

  • Fool: Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Mn). Bachmann is talking impeachment, which has signature significance: any elected official who brings up impeachment now or anytime before hard evidence turns up proving that President Obama personally delivered  a bag of gold to the IRS leadership to make sure proprietary tax information was leaked is an utter, irresponsible dolt. 1) No President has ever been convicted after their impeachment, and heaven knows we have had multiple Chief Executives factually guilty of “high crimes and misdemeanors.” It is a waste of time, an all-encompassing political warfare glut that this nation can’t afford at this point, especially when the U.S…
