If You Must Wear Your Tech, Try Not To Look Like An Idiot

TechCrunch

Sarah-Jessica-Parker-Google-Glass

Like Dance Moms or protein-only diets, wearable tech is one of those things that simultaneously incites excitement, bandwagonning, distrust and disgust. Gut instinct tells us we’re turning into cyborgs, which is either terrifying or great, depending on how you see it. Maybe we will become more efficient, fit versions of ourselves, or maybe we are simply setting ourselves up for the government to steal a new wealth of personal information. As Sarah wrote, the future of wearable tech is nearly impossible to predict, even for those most involved in its development.

These are big concerns. But I have another one: that your wearable tech is making you look like a tool.

An unofficial poll of five TechCrunch writers and editors revealed little faith in finding decent-looking wearables. The most popular suggestion was this followed by this.

But the thing is, sometimes you love what you love, and it’s awesome…

Iran’s Rohani vows to moderate foreign policy

Iran’s Rohani vows to moderate foreign policy – Israel News, Ynetnews.

President-elect condemns extremism, states commitment to inclusive cabinet, moderate views, urges ‘effective, constructive interaction with world’

Reuters

Published: 06.29.13, 15:21 / Israel News

Iran’s president-elect Hassan Rohani said on Saturday he would appoint ministers from across its political spectrum as Iranian voters had chosen a path of moderation over extremism.

His victory in the June 14 vote has lifted hopes of a thaw in Iran’s antagonistic relations with the West that might create openings for defusing its nuclear dispute with world powers. Rohani has pledged a more conciliatory approach than Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, under whose belligerent presidency the Islamic Republic drew ever more punishing international sanctions.

Rohani’s pledge of an inclusive cabinet could reassure conservative hardliners who look askance at the endorsement he was granted by reformists in the election.

In turn, reformists will hope to regain some…

Emma Watson talks cleavage in new The Bling Ring sneak peek

Metro

Emma Watson has said that the clothes her character wears in The Bling Ring are a lot more revealing than how she dresses in real life.

Harry Potter fans will see Emma Watson in a completely different light in The Bling Ring, as the actress has said her own demure tastes in style couldn’t play a part in the film.

‘All my usual fashion views went out the window,’ she said. ‘[I had] visible cleavage and very short skirts.’

The Bling Ring, based on true events, sees Emma play Nicki, one member of a group of fame-obsessed teenagers who rob the homes of the rich and famous.

Paris Hilton, who was targeted by the teenagers in real life, has a cameo in the film.

Mormons, Boy Scouts Sued for Sexual Abuse of Minors.

Rivers of Hope

Boy Scouts
Boy Scouts

Four men sued the Boy Scouts of America and its largest sponsor, the Mormon Church, on Monday accusing both organizations of failing to protect them from sexual abuse by adult volunteers when they were children at scouting activities in Idaho.

Three of the men said they were abused as members of Boy Scout troops affiliated with the Utah-based church, two of them by a scout leader previously identified as a molester in a complaint brought by a parent.

The fourth plaintiff belonged to a troop sponsored by a chapter of the Elk Club, which was not named as a defendant in the suit.

All the cases of abuse alleged in the lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Boise, the state capital, occurred in the early 1980s and 1970s, when the plaintiffs ranged in age from 12 to 14.

Two of the three accused abusers in…

Mother who beat her two-year-old son to death jailed for life

Metro

A mother who beat her two-year-old son to death has been jailed for life.

Rebecca Shuttleworth was told she must serve at least 18 years in prison for the murder of Keanu Williams.

Police called the 25-year-old a ‘monster’, with the boy’s injuries including a fist-sized scar on his abdomen.

The youngster’s body showed 37 external marks of injury and there was ‘tramline’ bruising consistent with Keanu having been struck with an object such as a stick or rod with some force.

Keanu was pronounced dead on January 9, 2011 after paramedics were called to his mother’s partner’s flat in Ward End, Birmingham.

During her trial it emerged Shuttleworth manipulated social workers when relatives reported concerns and even attended good parenting classes.

An inquiry has begun into why social services missed opportunities to intervene to save Keanu.

Shuttleworth’s partner Luke Southerton received a suspended nine-month sentence for one count of…

Iran secretly building in Port Sudan military supply base for Syria, Hizballah

Iran secretly building in Port Sudan military supply base for Syria, Hizballah.

DEBKAfile Exclusive Report June 25, 2013, 10:24 AM (IDT)

A logistics base for handling tanks, missile systems, self-propelled artillery and other heavy weaponry bound for Syria and Hizballah is secretly under construction in a section of Port Sudan which Omar al Bashir has leased to Tehran, debkafile reports exclusively from its military sources.

Iranian Revolutionary Guards engineers in civilian dress are overseeing the hundreds of Sudanese workmen laboring flat out to build Iran’s second Red Sea base after Assab in southern Eritrea.
As a safeguard against an Israeli strike, the new Iranian facility abuts directly on Port Sudan’s oil exporting installations, through which South Sudan, Israel’s ally, exports its oil, the new republic’s only source of revenue which also pays for its purchases of Israeli arms.

Russia Rejects Obama Demand for Snowden’s Extradition.

Russia’s foreign minister on Tuesday bluntly rejected U.S. demands to extraditeNational Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden, who has apparently stopped in Moscow while trying to evade U.S. justice, saying that Snowden hasn’t crossed the Russian border.

Sergey Lavrov insisted that Russia has nothing to do with him or his travel plans. Lavrov wouldn’t say where Snowden is, but he angrily lashed out at the U.S. for demanding his extradition and warnings of negative consequences if Moscow fails to comply.

“We consider the attempts to accuse Russia of violation of U.S. laws and even some sort of conspiracy, which on top of all that are accompanied by threats, as absolutely ungrounded and unacceptable,” Lavrov said. “There are no legal grounds for such conduct of U.S. officials, and we proceed from that.”

U.S and Ecuadorean officials said they believed Snowden was…

Michael Jackson’s bandages were fake, claims bodyguard

Metro

Michael Jackson used to wear fake bandages and cover his kids’ faces to stay in the limelight, his former bodyguard has claimed.

Matt Fiddes, who has also admitted he could be the biological father of one of Michael’s three children, told how the Thriller singer was desperate for his life to be ‘the biggest mystery on Earth’.

‘Obviously he had two sides, he used to say to me “Matt, I want my life to be the biggest mystery on Earth”, with the face masks and the make-up,’ Fiddes said.

The 34-year-old bodyguard told ITV’s Daybreak: ‘He really loved the whole controversy, he understood that if he put that face mask on then he’s going to make news the next day.’

‘I remember once we were getting ready to go out and we were just doing something simple, we were going to Uri Geller’s house for a curry and watch a…

Sorry Sony, I expected more from the new SmartWatch 2

Gigaom

As expected, Sony(s sne) launched a new smartwatch on Tuesday at the Mobile Asia Expo in Shanghai. The SmartWatch 2 is a follow-up to the company’s Live View series of watches that appeared in the past few years. Like its predecessors, SmartWatch 2 acts as a second screen for Android(s goog) phones but adds NFC, or near-field communications wireless technology, for easy pairing of the watch with a handset. Oh, and it tells the time, too.

Sony SmartWatch 2 trio

That last bit sounds obvious of course, but Sony is touting the SmartWatch 2 not just as a second screen. The device has “standalone capabilities” as well, which, when I read that, got me excited. Then, I noted what these functions are:

“When not connected to your phone, SmartWatch 2 works as a standalone digital watch. Read previously received notifications, access the time, set your alarm or even use as a light when searching…

Snowden: I Only Took Job to Get State Secrets.

Rivers of Hope

Image: Snowden: I Only Took Job to Get State Secrets

By Melanie Batley

Edward Snowden, the confessed leaker of the National Security Agency’s top-secret phone and Internet surveillance program, says he took his consulting job specifically to gain access to the agency’s surveillance activities.

“My position with Booz Allen Hamilton granted me access to lists of machines all over the world the NSA hacked,” Snowden told the South China Morning Post in a June 12 interview published Monday.

“That is why I accepted that position about three months ago.”

He said his intention was to collect information about how the NSA was hacking into “the whole world” and “not specifically Hong Kong and China.”

This latest admission, lawmakers say, could complicate Snowden’s legal case in the event he is extradited to the U.S. and tried. He was charged on Friday with three felonies under the Espionage Act.

“It’s evidence of intent, and it’s relevant to the sentencing if he were…

Kate Moss stripped down for St. Tropez — and that company saw its profits rise accordingly.

And Moss’s rumored nude cover for Playboy has earned that magazine a ton of buzz lately.

RELATED: Vote on bold star fashion here!

So it’s no wonder that Versace wants to get in on the action, enlisting famed fashion photographers Mert Alas & Marcus Piggot to snap Moss in her altogether, strategically covered by their handbags.

According to Donatella Versace, the “Autumn/Winter 2013 [campaign] is stripped back to the raw power of the clothes and models,” she said in a statement. “There’s no set, no distraction, just the provocation, glamour and attitude of our fashion.”

Look for Moss’s ads (as well as ones featuring models in the line’s bold fall clothes) in upcoming fashion mags. And in the meantime, tell us: What do you think of Moss’s latest…

Where was Obama? The question concerning Benghazi that we need to know

The Daley Gator

Doing research on Benghazi, and writing about it makes me sick. It makes me sick that our country, for whatever reason left Americans to die in Benghazi. No doubt there is plenty of blame to go around and no doubt we all want to know the “why” in Benghazi. I could accept if we had sent help, and it did not arrive in time. I can accept failure, what I cannot accept is failure to try. Again, we can point fingers at the CIA, the State Department, the White House, but that “why” keeps showing its ugly face. Then there is the “where” question, as in where was our president? No matter who you blame, CIA, State, whoever, the ultimate blame lies higher. Stacy McCain is also troubled by the matter of “Where”

Strange to say, we still have no answer to that question:

Unlike Chris Wallace, most…

Canadian Foreign Minister: Iran has just “2 or 3 months” to change course, diplomatic process “nearing the end.”

Joel C. Rosenberg's Blog

(Jerusalem, Israel) — After having just been in Ottawa meeting with Canadian Members of Parliament to discuss Israel and Middle East issues, I’ve now been in Israel for ten days of meetings and preparations for our upcoming Joshua Fund tour and Epicenter Conference. I was encouraged to read this morning that the Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird was recently in town to meet with Prime Minister Netanyahu and other Israeli and Palestinian officials. His comments on the Iran threat were worth noting because he indicated a concrete time frame by which Iran needs to show it has ended its nuclear program or other action — decisive action — needs to be taken. Coming from the most pro-Israel government on the planet, this was encouraging. My hope is that the Foreign Minister was also laying the groundwork for a state visit by Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, but there was no public report of…

Edinson Cavani insists he is not ‘worth’ astronomical transfer fee

Metro

Chelsea and Manchester United target Edinson Cavani insists he is not worth the €63m price tag Napoli have slapped on him ahead of a prospective summer switch.

A host of top European sides including Chelsea, Man United, Manchester City and Real Madrid are all reportedly keen on the Uruguayan frontman, but the successful bidder will have to shell out in excess of £50m to get their man.

And with a deal on hold with the 26-year-old’s suitors apparently baulking at the asking price, Cavani insists he is not worth the huge transfer fee.

‘I don’t think I’m worth €63m. I will have to talk to [Aurelio] De Laurentiis [Napoli president] about it. I owe a lot to Napoli and I want to leave through the front door if I move on,’ he said.

‘I am feeling very good at Napoli, but it all depends on the club. We will…

Firefox 22 Launches With Built-In Asm.js And WebRTC Support

TechCrunch

Mozilla today launchedFirefox 22, the first stable version of the popular browser that supports the WebRTC protocol and includes support for the organization’s asm.js JavaScript subset that offers near-native performance for web apps.

For the most part, browser releases have now become routine, especially since all the major vendors – with the exception of Microsoft – have switched to a rapid-release schedule. Both WebRTC and asm.js, however, have the potential to change how developers create web apps, so even if you usually ignore Firefox releases, this one is definitely worth a look.

Built-In WebRTC Support

Children_callWebRTC allows developers to create web apps with built-in video and audio calls, as well as file sharing without the need for any plugins or third-party software. A number of companies, including Tokbox  for example, are already betting big on WebRTC. Until now, however, only Google’s Chrome supported the budding standard in…
