Italian authorities prepare for Costa Concordia salvage

[metro-video id=”1256968″ video=”″ image=”” expires=”01-01-2020″]

A daring attempt to re-float the Costa Concordia has been given the final go-ahead by the Italian authorities.

Salvage operations will begin at dawn on Monday after Italy’s civil protection agency said the sea and wind conditions ‘fall within the range of operating feasibility’.

The ship struck a reef near the island of Giglio on January 13, 2012, and after taking on water through a 230-foot gash in its hull, capsized just outside the harbour.

Some 32 of the 4,200 passengers and crew members on board died and bodies of two of the dead have never been recovered from the wreck.

Salvagers plan to pull the ship upright in a make-or-break engineering feat that has never before been attempted with such a big ship so close to land.

If the operation, known as parbuckling, succeeds, the Concordia will be towed away and broken up for…

Miley Cyrus: Britney Spears called me because she loved We Can’t Stop

Controversial twerkster Miley Cyrus has claimed that she ended up collaborating with Britney Spears because the pop princess liked her song We Can’t Stop.

Miley, who has come under some criticism recently for dancing and performing provocatively wearing skimpy outfits, shares a manger with Britney.

‘We’ve been trying to work together and I felt like there had to be that right time,’ Cyrus told Alan Carr on his show Chatty Man.

‘After We Can’t Stop came out, she called and said how much she loved the song.

‘At first she heard the song and she didn’t know it was me, and then she watched the video and just sort of fell in love with the video,’ she added.

Miley, who recently compared herself to fellow former Disney star Britney during her emancipation period several years ago, went on to say the two could relate to each other.

James Franco voices his support for Ben Affleck – as director of Man Of Steel sequel

James Franco thinks Ben Affleck would be a great director of the Man Of Steel follow up.

The actor joined the likes of Joss Whedon, Josh Brolin and Val Kilmer in supporting the casting of Affleck as the next Bruce Wayne.

‘I think he’s proved himself now as both a director and an actor, but I will say he’s best in the movies he directs’ the Oscar-nominated star told E!.

‘Maybe he should direct it. I think he should direct it’ he added.

He also said that he felt the criticism Ben received from Batman fans was uncalled for.

‘Daredevil wasn’t my favourite movie, but I don’t blame Ben for that. As an actor there’s this crazy thing where you could be good, you do good work, but then if you’re in a movie that’s not so good, they blame you…That’s just crazy thinking.

‘I think he’ll be a good…

The Gift of Incompetence

Charis: Subject to Change

This has been a week of severe testing. I got a new computer.

I had to hot-wire my old one to get it started and the speaker jack only worked if I spoke to it very kindly reinserting the plug, honestly, up to fifty times to find the magic connection, then taping it there quickly before it disconnected again. Like an old person who complains you never come to visit them (when you just spent the whole day sorting their mail) and who speaks only of the past, its memory was not accepting new information or keep up with the times. It took frequent naps in the middle of our conversations.

My husband bought me a new one. Together with his nephew they worked all summer to put together a super-duper package with graphics boards and memory capacity beyond anything I’ve known before. It’s fantastic.

I just don’t know how…

L’Oreal to ‘part company’ with Cheryl Cole over rose bum tattoo

Cheryl Cole’s rose bum tattoo has raised quite a few eyebrows – including those at L’Oreal, as the beauty brand are apparently now considering dropping the Geordie star from their future campaigns.

The former Girls Aloud singer has been an ambassador of L’Oreal since 2009 – for which she gets a whopping £500,000 paycheck – but that could all be about to change after her latest inking.

The brand’s bigwigs are said to be ‘miffed’ at her new body art – which spreads across her upper thighs, bum and lower back – and don’t think it fits in with their ‘natural beauty’ image.

It doesn’t help that Cole currently fronts their Skin Perfection Skincare range.

John Kerry warns Syria threat of force remains if it does not hand over chemical weapons

The threat of force against Syria ‘is real’ if it does not hand over its chemical weapons for inspection, US secretary of state John Kerry has warned.

Mr Kerry issued the warning during a stop in Jerusalem, where he briefed Israeli leaders on the new US -Russian plan to rid Syria of chemical weapons.

Officials reached an ambitious agreement over the weekend calling for an inventory of Syria’s chemical weapons programme within one week.

All components of Syria’s chemical weapons programme are to be removed from the country or destroyed by mid-2014 in a deal aimed at averting US military strikes against the regime of Bashar al-Assad.

‘The threat of force is real and the Assad regime and all those taking part need to understand that President [Barack] Obama and the United States are committed to achieve this goal,’ Mr Kerry said.

If successful the deal ‘will have set a…

London Fashion Week: Kate Moss at Topshop’s effortlessly sexy show

Kate Moss took her place on the front row for London Fashion Week to see the show from Topshop, owned by her friend Philip Green.

Sitting with Green, his son, Brandon, and US Vogue editor Anna Wintour, Moss saw Cara Delevingne model the brand’s spring/summer collection.

And if there’s one thing you can count on with Topshop, it’s that they anticipate what women want before they even know they want it.

For winter, that meant pink coats, tactile fabrics and upscaled proportions but come next spring, it’s predicting you’ll want something completely different.

Head of design Emma Farrow was inspired by the wild heady days and endless freedom of summer, which translates into a collection of relaxed, fuss-free pieces that would be just as good on a relaxed Saturday in the city as they would on the beach in a far-flung destination.

The effortlessly sexy sundress is the item you’ll…

Syrian Oppos Seek Ban on Assad Using Air Strikes Against “Populated Areas”

Voices from Russia

00 Toddler Tantrum. 29.11.12

On Sunday, al Arabiya reported that the Syrian opposition demanded that the international community impose a ban on the use of airpower in urban areas by Syrian government forces, in addition to a chemical weapons ban. Quoting the opposition statement, the report stated, “The Syrian National Coalition insists that the prohibition of chemical weapons, the use of which left more than 1,400 civilians dead, be extended to the use of ballistic missiles and aircraft against urban areas”.

On Saturday, after weeks of intense diplomacy and almost three days of talks in Genèvebetween Foreign MinisterSergei Lavrov and his American counterpart John Kerry, the USA and Russia reached a landmark deal  that’d see all chemical weapons in war-torn Syria brought under international control and destroyed by mid-2014. Russia and the USA also reached a consensus on the quantity and types of chemical weapons in Syria…
