Breaking Bad wins at Emmy Awards leaving Downton Abbey empty-handed

British exports including Damian Lewis, Benedict Cumberbatch and the Downton Abbey cast couldn’t compete with gritty US drama at the 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards 2013, with Breaking Bad landing best drama and The Newsroom scoring acting gongs.

With Breaking Bad’s fifth and final season currently being broadcast, the AMC show has gone out on a high with the award, of which creator Vince Gilligan said: ‘I did not see this coming.’

Following a chemistry teacher who starts a lucrative side-business cooking crystal meth, the show has broken records as the highest rated ever and provoked a debate about whether it is the greatest of all time.

Lead actor Bryan Cranston was expected to receive his fourth Emmy at the Los Angeles ceremony, but was beaten to best actor by The Newsroom’s Jeff Daniels.
