The Hobbit: Smaug is the ‘Hannibal Lecter of the dragon world’

‘There has to be a psychotic danger,’ Peter Jackson recently said in LA, describing the Hobbit’s antagonist Smaug. ‘He is the Hannibal Lecter of the dragon world.’

‘In the Gollum encounter last year, you get the feeling that Bilbo within a couple of minutes has the measure of Gollum, kind of knows how to play him. But with Smaug, he is just unpredictable, dangerous, but super smart. He’s one step ahead of Bilbo which is what makes the character truly terrifying.’

As much as I enjoyed the first Hobbit installment, I did feel a bit like Milhouse watching Itchy and Scratchy and Poochy in that episode of The Simpsons: ‘When are they gonna get to the fireworks factory?!’

After three or so hours, the only bit of Smaug we got to see was his opening eye right at the end. But Smaug fans were satisfied in the knowledge the second…
