12 Years a Slave director Steve McQueen heckled as ‘garbage man’ at New York Film Critics Circle Awards


A critic launched a savage F-word attack on Steve McQueen as he accepted a prize at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards.

McQueen was picking up the best director prize for 12 Years a Slave at last night’s ceremony when CityArts editor Armond White started heckling from his table.

According to Variety, he shouted: ‘You’re an embarrassing doorman and garbage man. F*** you. Kiss my a**.’

White, who is African American, has made it clear that he is not a fan of the Oscar-tipped drama.

In a review, he wrote: ‘Depicting slavery as a horror show, McQueen has made the most unpleasant American movie since William Friedkin’s 1973 The Exorcist.’

The critic has heckled other A-listers before in past ceremonies although it is believed his comments were not heard at the front of the room and did not interrupt the event.
