What? Gareth Bale takes Lionel Messi’s place in Uefa Team of the Year vote


Just days after missing out on the Ballon d’Or prize, Lionel Messi has been handed another snub – after being omitted from Uefa’s Team of the Year.

Messi, who scored 45 goals in 46 appearances for club and country in 2013, missed out to Real Madrid new boy Gareth Bale in the XI.

There were places for Borussia Dortmund’s Marco Reus and Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil in an attacking line-up, but Messi missing out is the main headline.

None of the Argentine’s Barcelona team-mates also make the cut, with Andres Iniesta, Gerard Pique and Xavi not named.
